The Elephanta caves have been declared world heritage in 1987 UNESCO and it is maintained by archaeological survey of India.
It is a best place for one spend a leisure time with friends or for school picnics as well as for people deeply love with history.
My last visit was with my four friends and had very great time we enjoyed it too the core.
One can get there through jetty boat service provided from Apollo bunder (Gateway of India) till the island where these ancient caves are situated (approx 1 hour).
Besides it only takes 6 hours to visit complete island including travelling time.
The boat service is till 5:30 in evening only. Along with caves we can visit the cannon hill which have 2 huge cannons of 10 meters each and an stupendous view of port.
The caves have good old sculptures regarding it please check my photo albums and also stay cautious from monkeys. There is an museum with photos of other caves through out the state of Maharashtra. There is an old chattrapati Shivaji maharaj temple where only locals can make you reach very few people know regarding it. Food is not as good as compared too Mumbai but fairly high rated but with local taste in food. I strongly suggest not to buy anything as souvenir from there. Accommodation is provide by Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation(MTDC) and also a small toy train to come on land from water.
